ONTARIO, OH – Ottawa Glandorf used one of their best assets, team defense to shut down the three point shooting of Akron Hoban Tuesday night and advance to a second straight Regional Finals with a 49-35 win at Ontario High School.
Nora Minter scored the first two points of the contest for Hoban to give her squad the lead, but it would be short lived as Ottawa Glandorf’s Dani Ellerbock, Kylie White, and Kadie Hempfling accounted for all but one of the Titans points as a part of their 16-0 run to force their opponents into a timeout midway through the period. OG’s relentless hounding of the basketball would put them up 16-8 at the quarter break.
Hoban found spaces in the Titans 2-3 zone defense early in the second quarter but were unable to continue to do so in the latter part of the stanza and trailed by 11 at 27-16 at the games second stoppage. In the half the Knights were 0/5 from behind the arc and finished 0/11 as they were consistently denied the open looks they are used to getting by the OG zone.
Kara Marshall’s 4/4 performance from the free throw line coupled with a handful of OG turnovers helped the visitors on the scoreboard get their deficit down to 7 at the end of three, but that would be as close as they would find themselves on the scoreboard on the evening.
5’9 OG Junior Kylie White who had been held to just five points through the first three periods exploded in the fourth quarter as she tallied a quartet of buckets and finished as her teams second leading scorer with 13. Hempfling added four of her game high 19 points to help give OG a 49-35 win. In the game both White and Hempfling finished with double doubles as White snagged 13 rebounds while Hempfling grabbed 10 boards and handed out 5 assists.
Dani Ellerbrock, the Titans lone starting Senior finished the game with 10 points and a pair of steals. Lexi Schroeder and Devon Warnecke each connected on three pointers in the contest that helped fuel separate runs for OG in the game.
Hoban sees their season come to an end at 21-5 while the Titans (24-2) will move on to the Regional Finals on Friday night at 7:30pm back at Ontario as they take on Toledo Rogers (22-5) who were 67-35 victors over Bellevue in the nightcap.
