OTTAWA, OH – Days after losing their first regular season game in nearly two seasons the Ottawa Glandorf Titans got back on the winning track Saturday afternoon at home as they downed visiting Marion Local 68-42.
Marion Local senior Kara Evers had the Flyers inside game working early in the first quarter as she connected on four shots from down low for eight of her game high 14 points. Five players for Ottawa Glandorf got into the scoring column early, including freshman Kelsey Erford who pumped in all three of her points during her first start of the season before leaving the game late in the half with an injury.
Balanced scoring was the way of the Titan offense during the contest and was on full display in the second stanza as six players knocked in markers led by Erin Kaufman with six. Running their fast break offense to perfection and cutting down the turnovers that plagued them in the first quarter the Titans rolled into the break with a 37-19 advantage on the back of a 20 point eight minute span.
Through the second and into the third period the Marion Local offense relied heavily on the duo of Heidi and Natalie Rethman, their two leading scorers on the season. Beth Streib’s duo accounted for 10 of the visitors points in the stanza and assisted in setting up one of the other two baskets to help the Flyers try to keep pace with the fast paced Titan attack.
With foul trouble weighing heavily on the contest and beginning to mount up, each team would find themselves at the free throw line repeatedly in the final period. Marion Local’s Kara Evers connected on 4 of her 6 attempts and was successful driving into the post as she drew a foul that sent OG junior Paige Sutter to the bench for good late in the contest.
Ottawa Glandorf hit on 5 of their 6 tosses in the final stanza including a 2/2 performance from sophomore guard Brianna Schimmoeller who stepped in to shoot free throws designed originally for Kasey Ellerbrock who was fouled on a three point shot and was injured as she fell to the court. Despite her early exit from the contest, Ellerbrock knocked down a pair of threes and scored a career high 10 points.
Four Titan players finished in double figures led by Erin Kaufman with 12 on the afternoon while the Marion Local duo of Natalie Rethman and Evers finished with 14 apiece.
Marion Local sees their season record fall to 2-5 with their third straight loss and will next travel to Celina on Wednesday and Thursday night to play in the OVISCO Classic against Coldwater, St. Henry, and Celina.
OG moves their record to 7-1 on the season and has now won 16 straight at the Supreme Court. The Titans will host Columbus Grove on Thursday night before finishing up the 2017 part of their schedule on Saturday night at Liberty Benton.
