Flyers soar to state

KETTERING, OH – Marion Local utilized a hot start for the second time in as many games on Friday night at Trent Arena in Kettering to propel themselves to a 62-47 win over Fort Loramie and into next weeks Division 4 State semifinals.

Tyler Prenger, a 31.7% three point shooter on the season put the Flyers ahead early in the opening quarter as he nailed a pair of his five three point goals on the evening that propelled his team to a 15-4 first period lead.

For nearly the first 13 minutes of the opening half the Redskins were unable to connect on a field goal with the stingy defense provided by their opponents. Eli Rosengarten pulled his team to within 18-7 with 3:57 to go in the second quarter with a deep left wing three pointer for the first Fort Loramie field goal of the night. An Evan Berning two pointer made it a 12 point game with 1:45 left in the opening period and represented the closest the Shelby County League tri-champions would get through the first 16 minutes.

With just seconds to go in the second stanza Marion Local’s Matt Rethman connected on a deep corner three pointer to put his team ahead 26-13.

In the games penultimate stanza the Redskins hit on four field goals from four different players but saw their opponent continue to run away as Prenger again knocked down a shot from deep to keep the Flyers lead at 11 heading into the final quarter.

Dillon Braun knocked down four of his teams seven threes in the final period and finished with a team high 19 as the Redskins continued to not give up and used their pressure to force Flyer turnovers.

With their chance to play on the floor at Ohio State on the line for the final handful of minutes Marion Local connected on 14 of their 21 tosses from the charity stripe and watched as Tyler Prenger, Nate Bruns, and Matt Rethman combined to hit 12/16 free throws and finish the game with a combined 50 points.

Marion Local (23-4) avenged and earlier season loss at Fort Loramie with the victory and will play Pandora Gilboa on Thursday evening at 2pm at the Schott. The Redskins bow out on the year at 25-3.

Flyers, Redskins advance to finals

KETTERING, OH – Fort Loramie and Marion Local each posted wins on Tuesday night at Trent Arena in Kettering and will now meet for a trip to Columbus next week on Friday night.

Marion Local jumped out to a big first quarter lead and never looked back in their game, winning 55-33 over Springfield Catholic Central in the opener while Fort Loramie staved off a late Russia run to down their SCAL mates 48-45.

Nate Bruns got things going quickly for the Flyers in the first quarter as he connected for a pair of three pointers before Justin Albers tossed in a shot from beyond the arc of his own. Marion Local pushed their end of the first quarter lead to 17-5 just before the buzzer as they connected on a two point jumper.

Despite shooting just 6/18 from the field in the first half the Irish pulled to within 23-16 at the halftime stoppage behind a balanced attack that included a pair of three point makes of their own from the duo of Trey Dunn and Sabien Doolittle.

A punishing defensive effort and scoring from six different Flyers in the final two periods helped to stymie their Ohio Heritage Conference opponents who were making their first regionals appearance in 21 season.

Senior Tyler Mescher ended the night with 12 points and helped his team shoot nearly 50% from the field by putting himself in position for big offensive rebounds that helped keep possessions alive and allow guard Matt Rethman to find Justin Albers and Bruns for points and account for a 32 point second half.

Bearcats advance to Districts

VAN WERT, OH – Not only did Spencerville defeat Marion Local for the second time this season, they also got a measure of payback for the defeat they suffered in the District Finals last season that ended their year as they eliminated the Flyers Saturday afternoon with a 51-43 victory at Van Wert High School.

Bailey Croft started off hot for the Bearcats in the first quarter as he tossed in seven of his twelve contest points and gave his squad a big presence inside. 1st team MAC selection Derek Albers, a 6’2 Senior connected on a pair of triples and scored eight in the first quarter as Marion Local finished the first quarter with three shots from deep and a 15-9 lead.

Two shots would find their way into the bottom of the basket for the Flyers in the second stanza as Tyler Mescher put in a bucket alongside another deep three pointer from Albers. Spencerville responded in the period by outscoring their opponent 9-5 as Zach Goecke and Dakota Prichard each hit a shot from behind the arc but still found themselves behind by 2 at the break.

Goecke, an Honorable Mention NWC selection this season along with the two 1st team selections in Prichard and Mason Nourse took over the scoring load for coach Kevin Sensabaugh in the games penultimate period as they combined for 14 of the Cats 16 markers. The trios hot scoring put their team in the lead at 34-33 heading to the fourth.

Despite having given up seven three pointers to the Flyers on the afternoon during the first three quarters, the Bearcats allowed none in the fourth quarter and repeatedly got themselves to the free throw line. Dakota Prichard hit 7 of his 8 charity tosses in the games final eight minutes and helped procure a 51-43 win and a Sectional Championship for Spencerville.

30 point effort from Mescher fuels Flyer win

NEW KNOXVILLE – A career high 30 point scoring effort from Sophomore Tyler Mescher helped push his Marion Local Flyers past the New Knoxville Rangers and to 2-0 in Midwest Athletic Conference play by a 61-52 margin Friday night.

Mescher started slow with just two points in the first quarter and was relegated to the bench for a stretch after picking up a pair of fouls, but rebounded in the second quarter as he tossed in eight points and saw his Flyers take a 28-20 advantage into the halftime break.

Not to be outdone however New Knoxville’s Logan Leffel began to heat up himself as he accounted for eight first half points himself. While the two players came about their points in drastically different ways, both poured them in by the bunches in the third and fourth quarters as Leffel scored 21 and Mescher 22 before the game came to a conclusion.

Leffel’s second half included a trio of triples from long distance that helped to cut his teams deficit to just a single point late in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Rangers they would not be able to find a compliment to the 6’0 senior on the night and fell to the Flyers as they capitalized on 12 New Knoxville turnovers and connected from the free throw line en route to the win.

Marion Local finished the contest shooting just 12/27 from the charity stripe and 2/19 from beyond the arc, but they outrebounded the Rangers 33-26 with many of those coming in the form of offensive rebounds and stickbacks for their second half points.

Derek Albers added 11 points for Marion Local in the win while Nathan Tinnerman scored 13 for his team who dropped their first game of the season at home against three wins.

The Flyers (5-4, 2-0) will travel to Van Wert to take on the Cougars while the Rangers (3-7, 0-2) will be at home on Saturday night as they play host to the Jackson Center Tigers in a non-league affair.

Fourth quarter run pushes Flyers past Wildcats

MARIA STEIN, OH – A 23 point fourth quarter Friday night helped push the Marion Local Flyers to a win in their first game of the season as they defeated visiting Minster 58-47 in a Midwest Athletic Conference contest.

Despite having just 6 practices and less than two weeks together as a unit after another run to the OHSAA Division 6 State Football Championship game, the Marion Local Flyers came out in the first quarter on a mission to match each of the points by their opponent. Minster who came into the weekend with a pair of contests already under their belt this season got the better of the Flyers however in the opening period as they jumped out to a 16-13 lead at the end of the first eight minutes led by scores from six different players.

Balanced scoring would lead the visiting Wildcats to a 28-23 lead as they used a 12-0 run in the middle of the quarter to build their advantage, but a three pointer from Marion Local Senior Cole Griesdorn cut the Minster lead from eight to five as the buzzer sounded to end the opening half.

Having already gone on a big run in the first half the Wildcats jumped on the Flyers in the third period as a 7-0 run helped push Marion Local into having to call a timeout to regroup.

Marion Local would make their own big run across the end of the third and start of the fourth periods behind a three pointer and steal for a basket from Nathan Bruns and a bucket to open the fourth from Tyler Mescher to get the lead for the first time.

Most of the fourth and final period would see each team shoot free throws as the Flyers would connect on 12/19 to just 5/10 for Minster and help the Flyers complete the comeback win 58-47. 5’10 Senior Kyle Homan would do the most damage for Marion Local at the charity stripe as he finished the quarter by connecting on 7/11 tosses en route to nine points on the night.

Griesdorn and Tyler Mescher would find themselves as the games leading scorers as they each tossed in 15 points for the victorious Flyers. Marion Local (1-0, 1-0 MAC) will play host to Celina Saturday night in a non-conference contest that will be broadcast live on www.k943.com.

Minster (1-2, 1-1 MAC) welcomes Houston to town for a non-league tilt and was led in scoring on the night by Jared Thobe’s 10 point 6 rebound effort.
