Rangers stop skid

NEW KNOXVILLE, OH – Behind a terrific team performance at the free throw line Monday night the New Knoxville Rangers stopped their three game losing streak as they handed their visitors their second loss of the season 43-28 to improve to 3-5 on the year.

Trailing early in the opening period the Bearcats pushed themselves into the lead at the end of the first quarter 7-6 and even further as the second period began on the back of an 11-0 run until a Megan Jurosic free throw put a stop to the shutout.

Following a nearly five minute drought the New Knoxville offense came back to tie the contest with 5:05 remaining in the opening half and into a 12-11 advantage when freshman Morgan Leffel connected on a pair of tosses from the charity stripe. For the evening the Ranger guard finished with 10 markers and hitting on all 10 of her free throws.

In the first half the Bearcats struggled from the field as they finished 3/12 from the field and found themselves behind the home team at the break 23-19.

Neither team was particularly sharp in the third stanza as they combined to score just 12 markers in the eight minute span.

As she had done early on for New Knoxville it was again Jurosic who was able to have herself a big quarter as she ended the final stanza with four of her game high 14 points.

Outscored 13-4 in the final period the Bearcats were hounded by the New Knoxville defense and able to connect on just one shot from the field, a basket by freshman guard Emma Leis.

Morgan Leffel led the Rangers fourth quarter attack as she connected on 4/4 from the line and added to her team high 8 rebounds on the evening.

New Knoxville finished the contest shooting 12/32 from the field as a team but a sensational total of 17/21 from the free throw line. Spencerville meanwhile ended the night just 9/33 from the field and 6/14 from the line to go with 19 turnovers.

The Rangers (3-5) will return to action on Thursday night when they play host to Anna while the Bearcats (5-2) will be off until December 28th when they travel to take on Fort Jennings for their second of five straight games in a month span away from the Walk-In closet.

Bearcats win 3rd straight

NEW KNOXVILLE, OH – Gary Schrolucke and Dakota Prichard combined for 21 of Spencerville’s 31 points in the second half, and the Bearcats grabbed 10 offensive rebounds in the final two periods as the visitors defeated New Knoxville 54-42 in non-conference action at the Barn Friday night.

Each squad opened the first quarter with a pair of turnovers and shots from inside the arc but were unable to get into an effective flow of their offense early on as the opposing defense consistently found themselves in key position to keep the score in single digits. With only seconds left in the first quarter the Rangers nabbed an 11-10 advantage at the first quarter break as they sank a three pointer just before the buzzer.

Dakota Prichard’s seven second quarter points helped fuel a 12-7 second quarter that gave Spencerville a 22-18 halftime lead, but the Bearcat defense helped keep New Knoxville’s leading scorer Nick Topp to just one make from the field in the period and held the 6’1 Senior to 8 in the opening two quarters while not allowing him to create many open opportunities as well for his teammates.

Four players scored for the Bearcats in the second half as they again outscored their opponents in a quarter 12-7 and took their largest lead of the game into the final period leading by 9 at 34-25.

Missed free throws would become a story for Spencerville in the third and into the fourth quarter as the visitors finished just 7/15 on the evening but hit enough shots from the perimeter that they were able to keep the score near or in double digits until the clock struck all zeroes.

Nick Topp accounted for 10 of his team high 21 points in the final eight minutes but was unable to keep Prichard at bay for the Bearcats as he also tossed in 10 points. Schrolucke’s three pointer and basket provided 5 of his 13 markers in the ballgame and helped Spencerville to wrap up a 54-42 victory.

New Knoxville (2-3) has not beaten the Bearcats at home since they were victorious over Spencerville by a 60-38 score on December 30th, 2008. The Rangers will be off until next Friday, December 30th when they travel to St. Marys to take on the Roughriders.

Spencerville sees their record move to 5-1 on the season and will have a week off for the Christmas break as well before they travel to take on the Kalida Wildcats on Friday night.

Bearcats start slow & finish fast, down Rangers

It took the Spencerville offense a little white to click on Saturday night at “The Barn” in New Knoxville, but once they got on track they wasted no time lighting up the scoreboard en route to a 61-47 win over the Rangers.

Senior guard Andrew Arnett was on fire for New Knoxville in the first quarter as he exploded out of the gate for the games first score and added two more as well as a three pointer to finish with 9 on 4/4 shooting to help his team to a 22-12 advantage after the first stanza. Joining Arnett on the offensive end were Nick Topp (4), Shane Topp (3), Jalen Fullenkamp (2) and Ethan Kuck (2) as 4/5ths of the starters for New Knoxville got on the board in the opening eight minutes.

Despite making just 5 baskets in the first quarter, the Bearcats would open the second quarter on a tear as the offensive rebounding of Bailey Croft (game high 18 points and 12 rebounds) would prove to be a difference maker in helping the Cats go on a 14-0 run and finish 12/35 from the field in the first half. Croft would be a huge difference maker on the glass as 3 of his rebounds on the offensive end would result in immediate stick backs for Spencerville to help them build their 32-30 advantage at the break. Shane Topp was the leading scorer in the quarter for New Knoxville as his pair of three pointers helped keep the Rangers in the lead until late in the half when Spencerville went ahead.

Spencerville would push their advantage to 45-41 after the 3rd quarter as they utilized buckets a trio of long distance shots from Mason Nourse and Zach Goecke and a pair of free throws from Dakota Prichard (10 points, 10 rebounds). Andrew Arnett did his best to keep the game from getting out of hand for New Knoxville as he accounted for 5 of his teams 11 points in the period including one from beyond the arc.

Jalen Fullenkamp, the leading scorer for the Rangers this season at 21.6 points per game through the first 5 games of the season was held mostly in check by the Bearcats swarming zone defense. Fullenkamp would only account for 6 points and 5 rebounds on the night with 2 of those coming from the charity stripe in the last quarter. Spencerville would use their tenacious defense to stymie the New Knoxville defense into committing 14 turnovers on the night as well as only being able to add 6 points to their final tally in the last stanza of play.

Four players for Spencerville finished in double figures in points as Bailey Croft tossed in 18, Zach Goecke 12, and 10 each from Jacob Meyer and Dakota Prichard. This marks the second straight game that 4 Bearcats finished in double figures as the same foursome accounted for 54 of their teams 63 points last Saturday night in a win over Ottoville.

New Knoxville would finish 19/43 from the field and be led in scoring by Andrew Arnett with 18 in the loss as they drop to 2-4 on the season and will next play on Friday January 3rd at St. Marys in a WBL vs MAC matchup you can hear live on www.wkki.net with myself and Denny Cisco.

Spencerville upps their season record to 4-2 with the win and will return home to the Walk-In Closet next Friday night as well to take on Coach Dick Kortokrax and the Kalida Wildcats in non-league action.
