Landin scores 1000th as Big Green stay undefeated

OTTOVILLE, OH – A big win over rival Ottawa Glandorf got bigger for Ottoville on Thursday night as senior Bridget Landin notched her 1,000th point in a 54-48 victory over the previously unbeaten Titans at L.W. Heckman Gymnasium in front of a packed house.

Landin, the future Findlay Oiler scored her 1,000th career point with 3:34 remaining in the fourth quarter from the free throw line to give her team a 45-39 advantage in the closing minutes of her teams win before adding three more points to finish the night with 1,003 total career markers.

In reaching the milestone on Thursday evening, Landin becomes the seventh player in Big Green history to accomplish the feat and joins a list that includes Sue Honigford, Melanie Miller, Tracy Wenzlick, Karla Wenzlick, Stacey Wannemacher, and most recently former Bowling Green Falcon Abby Siefker who played for Ottoville from 2010-13.

Behind a strong defensive performance from a future BGSU Falcon in Kadie Hempling, Landin was held scoreless until mid-way through the third quarter but saw her teammates respond with points from behind the arc and the free throw line to push them ahead of OG heading after the first period of play 14-12.

Trailing by two entering the second quarter the Titans (6-1) trailed for just :36 in the period before a three pointer from Hempfling gave them a 15-14 advantage they would carry into the halftime break at 26-18. Three pointers in the stanza from Carri Johnson, Brianna Schimmoeller, and Kasey Ellerbrock helped to fuel an Ottawa Glandorf run that helped hold Ottoville to just four quarter points and one make from the field.

Ottawa Glandorf found themselves on their heels in the third period as they were held to seven points in the quarter as the Ottoville defense clamped down on the basketball. Offensively the Big Green got strong quarters from Quinley Schlagbaum and Bridget Landin who also combined to finish 6/6 in the period from the charity stripe.

Perhaps the biggest shot for Ottoville in the third quarter came at the end of it as Abi Hilvers who had already connected on a deep shot from behind the arc in the third nailed a second deep three pointer as time expired to push the Ottoville advantage to 41-33 heading into the final eight minutes of play.

Kasey Knippen and Haley Hoersten continued the three point barrage for Ottoville in the final period as they dropped in the sixth and seventh makes of the night to help push the teams lead out to 10 with two minutes to play at 51-41.

Having not lost a regular season game in their last 30 outings, the Titans would not go away quietly. Behind the duo of Hempfling and Ashley Schroeder scoring wise the Titans pulled their deficit to just four with minutes to go before the Big Green would salt the game away by hitting on 5/7 free throws in the period to secure their six point win.

OG was led on the night in the scoring column by Hempfling (16), and Schroeder (15) while the Ottoville was headed by junior sharpshooter Kasey Knippen who finished with 13 and connected on a trio from beyond the arc.

The Titans will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as they take on Marion Local at home. Ottoville (8-0) has now won 18 straight regular season games dating back to the middle of last season when they were beaten by Bath, a team who will come to visit the Big Green on January 9th, 2018.
