OTTAWA, OH – While Mother Nature might have won the first round of Ottawa and Napoleon’s District Tournament matchup on Wednesday night it was the Fighting 63rd who rallied back from a 4-3 deficit to begin the restart and stay in the winners bracket with a 7-6 victory on Thursday evening.
Eight batters came to the plate for Ottawa in the games sixth inning that saw the home team push across four runs to take a 7-5 lead they would hold on to the rest of the contest. With one out in the inning catcher Kaden Sullivan (Bath) doubled off of Napoleon hurler Layne Good to give Ottawa their first base runner of the frame. Following a ground out Sullivan would find himself crossing the plate on a Brayden Sautter (Ada) single before Sautter himself was sent home from first on a two out RBI double by leadoff hitter Jackson Lammers (Miller City). Miller City graduates continued to produce in the game just moments later as Corbin Niese drilled a double into the outfield to score Lammers for the third run of the inning before later scoring himself on a wild pitch by Good for the stanzas final tally.
Ryan Stoller (Van Wert) took over on the mound to begin the game on Thursday after 3.2 innings of work from Kalida hurler Austin Swift. On the day Stoller would toss 5.1 innings of work and give up just two runs on three hits in earning the win.
The games biggest defensive play came in the final inning as with one out already in the books for Napoleon the River Bandits University of Toledo bound Layne Schnitz-Paxton gambled on a double off the left field wall and was thrown out by the combination of Austin Swift to Jackson Lammers to Ryan Gossard (Bath). For his part of the play it was Gossard who stayed with the tag and swiped Schnitz-Paxton on the right arm as he attempted to move back to the base on the outside. One play later Gossard gobbled up a ground ball and tossed across the diamond for the games final out to preserve the victory for Ottawa (13-12).
With the win the 63rd now will return home for a Friday 6pm matchup against Pemberville, a team that just defeated Ottawa a week ago on the same field 7-5. Hear the game live as it happens on the home of the Fighting 63rd Zsportslive.com
