Titans win top 10 battle

WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, OH – After trailing at the end of the first quarter on Saturday afternoon the #3 Ottawa Glandorf offense kicked into high gear and pulled away from host #7 Miami Trace with a 51-36 victory in a battle of state ranked teams.

Having already added the all-time Ottawa Glandorf assist record to her resume in a win nine days earlier while visiting Van Wert, Titan senior Kadie Hempfling took aim at a new target, the OG scoring record.

Early in the second quarter Hempfling handed out an assist to Brianna Schimmoeller who promptly knocked down one of her two three pointers in the period to help put the Titans ahead for the first time before hitting one of her own, a triple from the wing that pushed her past former teammate Kylie White and into third place all-time in school history with 1,057 points for her career.

For her part Schimmoeller, a 5’4 sophomore who started earlier in the season came off the bench and scored eight of her 11 points in the game in the quarter to help push OG out in front at 28-16 when the first half came to an end. Miami Trace was held to just four points in the stanza with a pair of those markers coming from All-Ohio selection and future Florida Gulf Coast forward Tanner Bryant.

Bryant and teammate Victoria Fliehman a Cedarville signee pumped in a trio of shots from beyond the three point line in the games penultimate period but found their team behind by 13 at 43-30 heading into the final eight minutes.

In the middle of the third period it was Hempfling again for OG who thrilled her teams fans who made the 2 hour plus trip when she tossed in a running layup off the glass. The basket symbolized not only two more points for the Titans, but also career point 1,061 for the future BGSU Falcon and pushed her into second place all-time in school history past Sandy Buddlemeyer on the scoring list.

Shay McDonald was a bright spot for an otherwise dreary shooting day for Miami Trace at times as she filled up a game high 16 points including a pair of long distance shots for three points.

Just five players scored in the contest for the Panthers (13-2) who were defeated by the Titans (14-1) for the second straight season.

Ashley Schroeder ended the night with 8 points for OG while Paige Sutter nabbed a handful of rebounds and finised with 7 tallies in the victory.

Ottawa Glandorf will be home on Thursday night to take on Shawnee while Miami Trace will travel to Eastern Brown on Thursday evening.

Titans win top 15 battle

OTTAWA, OH – #14 Miami Trace scored the first nine points of their Saturday afternoon tilt at top ranked Ottawa Glandorf but the Titans responded with 18 of the next 21 and rode a strong defensive effort the rest of the way to a 57-46 victory.

The home squad weren’t able to erase the zero from their scoring column until the 4:25 mark of the first quarter when Kadie Hempfling’s bucket cut into a 9-0 Miami Trace lead built on the back of a trio of three pointers from Hanna Reisinger and Victoria Fliehman.

Erin Kaufman gave the Titans their first lead of the contest during the midst of their 18-3 quarter closing run at 13-12 with 52.8 seconds remaining in the opening stanza by connecting on a three pointer from straight away. Kylie White added six points from the field to help her squad out to an 18-12 lead after the first eight minutes of play.

6’1 Senior Sam Ritenour scored 11 points in the contest for Miami Trace and hit on six of her markers in the second quarter as she helped the Panthers outscore OG 12-8 in the period and cut the Titan lead to 26-24 at the break.

Back and forth the score would go in the third quarter as each team traded baskets. Miami Trace grabbed the lead with 5:35 to go in the third on a three pointer from Fliehman but the Titans snagged the advantage back with 4:42 left at 28-27 when Kylie White connected on a two point basket.

Lexi Schroeder’s only points of the contest, a triple from the corner gave OG back the lead. Schroeder, a 5’9 Senior who averages seven points per game finished with just the aforementioned score but was worth her weight in gold and then some as the Titan starter helped to hold Miami Trace’s leading scorer Tanner Bryant to just four points in the game.

The games leading scorer Kylie White tossed in eight of her 22 points on the afternoon and helped the Titans stave off the visiting Panthers 57-46 as they utilized their tempo and pace in an attempt to wear down their opponents successfully.

Miami Trace (14-2) was led in scoring by Victoria Fliehman’s 14 while the Titans (16-0) were paced by 22 from White.

Titans look to get back to State

OTTAWA, OH – For the past two years the Ottawa Glandorf Lady Titans have finished their season as runners up in the OHSAA Tournament but will look to take the next step this season as they return a talented and experienced group to the hardwood.

Head Coach Troy Yant is back behind the Titan bench and ready to continue his teams dominance in the Western Buckeye League this season and build on the success of the programs first conference crown last year since their previous title that came during the 2004-05 campaign. Yant will enter this season with a career record of 90-15 and a 30-7 WBL mark.

Last season’s Point Guard Dani Ellerbrock has graduated and is now plying her trade in the college ranks at Columbus, Ohio based Mount Vernon Nazarene University. During her four years under the tutelage of Yant the four year starter finished as a 2nd Team WBL selection last year and was honored at the State Tournament last season for having started 108 games in her high school career.

Returning for the defending Western Buckeye League champions this season will be the WBL Player of the Year Kadie Hempfling. Hempfling, a versatile Junior who averaged 15.3 ppg, 8.3 rebounds per game, and 3.4 assists per contest on her way to 2nd team All-Ohio honors in Division 2. Entering this season Hempfling has accrued 634 points in her first two seasons of varsity action and figures to be one of the best players in the league and the Northwest Ohio area once again.

Coming off of a strong season in which she led the Titans in total points scored with 370 tallies and a 12.7 points per game average, Senior Kylie White will be another key addition for OG if they are able to make a long run deep into the tournament as they have done the past two years. White snagged 8.3 rebounds and handed out 3.4 helpers a contest while also leading the team in scoring for a majority of the season en route to a 1st Team WBL and 2nd team All-Ohio selection last year.

Lexi Schroeder, a 5’9 Senior Wing for Ottawa Glandorf came off the bench two seasons ago in a limited role but emerged as a go to scorer for her squad last season as she led the team in scoring on four occasions including a career high 15 points in a win over Perrysburg early in the season. Schroeder finished her Junior campaign averaging 7.8 points per game while pulling down 4 rebounds and will be counted on for a similar output this season.

Sophomore Point Guard Erin Kaufman might not be the biggest guard leading her team in the WBL but she might be the fiercest defender the conference has to offer. Standing at 5’5 the OG second year guard is coming off of a year in which she burst onto the scene by averaging 4.8 points and an assist per contest while also being tasked with guarding some of the better offensive players in the lineup each night on the other side of the court. In last seasons State Championship game loss to Kettering Alter it was Kaufman who stepped in to lead the OG offensive attack as she finished with a team high 12 points.

Two returning letter-winners in Senior Devon Warnecke and Junior Carri Johnson will be looked at to provide not only solid offense and defense for the Titans but also leadership to the younger players as they have each been part of the two trips to the Finals the past two years as well. Joining the aforementioned duo will be Junior Mackenzie Meyer who finished last season with 1.6 points per game and will look to contribute greatly as her role grows this season with more minutes available to her.

Joining the rest of last seasons strong nucleus and looking to add significant minutes will be 5’8 Senior Courtney Bockrath who appeared in 22 games last season and tossed in 30 points, and Sophomores Paige Sutter (5’11 Post), and 5’4 guard Ashley Schroeder whose 2 points last season came early on against Tinora.

Ottawa Glandorf opens their season on Saturday against Miller City at home with a 6pm Junior Varsity tip.
