Spartans shock Titans

LIMA, OH – Saturday afternoon at Lima Senior High School the Lady Spartans pulled off their biggest win of the season as they defeated #3 state ranked Ottawa Glandorf 51-47.

For Lima Senior a pair of juniors in Taja Oglesbee and Talor Washington combined to score 27 of the teams points in the game and helped put the game away in the fourth quarter from the free throw line. In the first quarter it was Washington who put the Spartans on top for the first time at 8-5 as she knocked down a shot from behind the line with 3:50 remaining in the period.

Leading 14-13 after the first quarter the home team added a pair of triples from Washington and freshman point guard Nakiya Sigman to put the Titans on their heels. Ottawa Glandorf was led in the period from the free throw line by Kadie Hempfling who connected on all four of her tries and helped to pull the Titans back to even at 21-21 with just seconds remaining before Sigman canned a three pointer at the buzzer to put LSH on top 24-21 at the halftime break.

In the first half Ottawa Glandorf found their shots few and far between, but found them much easier to come by in the third stanza as they utilized scoring from four different players including a three pointer from freshman Kelsey Erford to put them ahead 35-31 heading to the final eight minutes.

The fourth quarter would see many lead changes between the two teams occur before the final buzzer. Ottawa Glandorf hit a pair of three pointers from Hempfling and Brianna Schimmoeller but were unable to keep up with the scoring output from Oglesbee who accounted for a pair of three pointers and a 4/4 effort from the line in the end.

Late in the period the visiting Titans pulled within 1 but were unable to take the lead as Destiny McDonald was successful on a three point play to put her squad back on top for good.

Free throw shooting played a big part in the final result of the contest as OG finished 9/14 from the line while their opponents went 14/16.

Lima Senior (8-10) stops a two-game losing streak with the win and will take on Toledo Whitmer on Thursday night. Taja Oglesbee led the Spartans with 17 points and was joined in double figures by Nakiya Sigman (13) and Talor Washington (10).

Titans move to 13-0 on season

OTTAWA, OH – After surviving a fast paced first quarter where visiting Lima Senior seemingly could not miss from the field on Saturday afternoon the OG Lady Titans settled down the Spartan attack and moved to 13-0 on the year with a 69-47 victory.

The #2 ranked team in Ohio’s Division 2 Associated Press rankings allowed 18 points in the opening quarter to their opponents including 7 from Senior point guard Kierre James, but got five or more points from three players of their own (Ashley Schroeder, Erin Kaufman, and Kadie Hempfling) to send the game to the end of the opening period at 24-18 OG.

Tough defense from the Titans held Lima Senior to no points from the field in the second stanza and saw the Spartans scoring come from three different trips by a trio of players (Ashiana Sigman, Destiny McDonald, and Talor Washington) end in made charity shots. Devon Warnecke’s three pointer midway through the quarter marked the third of the opening half for OG who jetted out to a 37-21 halftime advantage.

LaToine Cowan hit a pair of shots from beyond the arc for LSH to open the scoring for the Spartans in the third period to bring her team within 9 but the Titans responded just moments later as Kadie Hempfling’s toss down the court found its way to the hands of Sophomore guard Erin Kaufman for two of her eight quarter markers.

Ashley Schroeder and Kylie White joined Kaufman in double figures for the hosts in the third quarter as they each tossed in a pair of buckets to help OG push their lead to 54-37 heading to the final eight minutes.

Lima Senior kept battling in the fourth quarter early on as the Titans continued to apply their pressure and finally saw McDonald break through from the field with her eight point and first to come not from the free throw line.

As the final buzzer sounded the Titans picked up win 13 in a row to begin the season and defeated the Spartans for the 11th time in 14 meetings between the two schools who restarted their contests against one other last year following a decade hiatus.

Lima Senior (5-8) was led in scoring by Cowan’s 13 while the Titans (13-0) were led by Erin Kaufman’s career high of 21. Kadie Hempfling finished with just 7 points in the contest but led OG in steals (7), assists (9) and rebounds (18).

While the Spartans will take on the Elida Bulldogs on Tuesday night the Titans will travel east to Berlin, Ohio for a 10 A.M. date with Massillon Tuslaw on Monday at the annual Classic In the Country event. (Hear it live on WZOQ Radio)

Titans look to get back to State

OTTAWA, OH – For the past two years the Ottawa Glandorf Lady Titans have finished their season as runners up in the OHSAA Tournament but will look to take the next step this season as they return a talented and experienced group to the hardwood.

Head Coach Troy Yant is back behind the Titan bench and ready to continue his teams dominance in the Western Buckeye League this season and build on the success of the programs first conference crown last year since their previous title that came during the 2004-05 campaign. Yant will enter this season with a career record of 90-15 and a 30-7 WBL mark.

Last season’s Point Guard Dani Ellerbrock has graduated and is now plying her trade in the college ranks at Columbus, Ohio based Mount Vernon Nazarene University. During her four years under the tutelage of Yant the four year starter finished as a 2nd Team WBL selection last year and was honored at the State Tournament last season for having started 108 games in her high school career.

Returning for the defending Western Buckeye League champions this season will be the WBL Player of the Year Kadie Hempfling. Hempfling, a versatile Junior who averaged 15.3 ppg, 8.3 rebounds per game, and 3.4 assists per contest on her way to 2nd team All-Ohio honors in Division 2. Entering this season Hempfling has accrued 634 points in her first two seasons of varsity action and figures to be one of the best players in the league and the Northwest Ohio area once again.

Coming off of a strong season in which she led the Titans in total points scored with 370 tallies and a 12.7 points per game average, Senior Kylie White will be another key addition for OG if they are able to make a long run deep into the tournament as they have done the past two years. White snagged 8.3 rebounds and handed out 3.4 helpers a contest while also leading the team in scoring for a majority of the season en route to a 1st Team WBL and 2nd team All-Ohio selection last year.

Lexi Schroeder, a 5’9 Senior Wing for Ottawa Glandorf came off the bench two seasons ago in a limited role but emerged as a go to scorer for her squad last season as she led the team in scoring on four occasions including a career high 15 points in a win over Perrysburg early in the season. Schroeder finished her Junior campaign averaging 7.8 points per game while pulling down 4 rebounds and will be counted on for a similar output this season.

Sophomore Point Guard Erin Kaufman might not be the biggest guard leading her team in the WBL but she might be the fiercest defender the conference has to offer. Standing at 5’5 the OG second year guard is coming off of a year in which she burst onto the scene by averaging 4.8 points and an assist per contest while also being tasked with guarding some of the better offensive players in the lineup each night on the other side of the court. In last seasons State Championship game loss to Kettering Alter it was Kaufman who stepped in to lead the OG offensive attack as she finished with a team high 12 points.

Two returning letter-winners in Senior Devon Warnecke and Junior Carri Johnson will be looked at to provide not only solid offense and defense for the Titans but also leadership to the younger players as they have each been part of the two trips to the Finals the past two years as well. Joining the aforementioned duo will be Junior Mackenzie Meyer who finished last season with 1.6 points per game and will look to contribute greatly as her role grows this season with more minutes available to her.

Joining the rest of last seasons strong nucleus and looking to add significant minutes will be 5’8 Senior Courtney Bockrath who appeared in 22 games last season and tossed in 30 points, and Sophomores Paige Sutter (5’11 Post), and 5’4 guard Ashley Schroeder whose 2 points last season came early on against Tinora.

Ottawa Glandorf opens their season on Saturday against Miller City at home with a 6pm Junior Varsity tip.

4 in double figures propels OG to 6th straight win

LIMA, OH – Ottawa Glandorf’s starters accounted for 69 of their season high 76 points Saturday afternoon as they knocked off Lima Senior 76-63.

Kylie White, Lexi Schroeder and Kadie Hempfling each reached double figures in the first half of the contest and helped the Titans jump out to a 42 point first half at Lima Senior High School.

Spartans Senior Essence Cowan came into the day looking for 11 points to hit the 1,000 point mark for her career but did not accomplish the feat until connecting on a third quarter layup for her 12th marker on the day.

Ottawa Glandorf utilized 14 Spartan turnovers and turned almost every one of them into layups or scores from inside the arc where they finished the matchup 31 of 50 in the win.

Future Bowling Green State University Falcon Rion Thompson was the games high scorer with 31 points but was unable to help her team cut the visitors advantage to less than double digits in the second half of the programs 13th all-time meeting.

OG’s fourth player in double figures was Senior point guard Dani Ellerbrock who in addition to shutting down the Lima guards tossed in a dozen points including four on back to back steals and scores in the final period.
