LEXINGTON, OH – Saturday afternoon the Ottawa Glandorf Lady Titans clinched their fourth straight trip to Columbus as they dispatched the Western Reserve Lady Roughriders 62-40.
Despite a slow start on the offensive end the Titans picked up their defense and transition game in the latter stages of the first period and found themselves survivors of an early Rider barrage and on top 14-12 at the quarter break thanks to baskets by 5 different players.
Against a 2-3 zone from their opponents the Titans knocked down a pair of shots from outside in the second stanza from the hands of senior Carri Johnson and sophomore Brianna Schimmoeller to push their lead into double digits for the first time. Cora Wyers scored on the only non free throw of the second eight minutes for two of her teams markers in the quarter and found her team trailing 30-16 at the break.
Western Reserve’s all-time leading three point shooter Andrea Robson connected on one of her two makes from behind the arc in the third period for three of her 8 points in the game but was unable to stop the Titans outside game as Carri Johnson struck twice to keep the OG offense in high gear.
5’11 junior post Paige Sutter knocked down a pair of jumpers in the third and finished with a career high 10 points but also used a stellar defensive night as she was able to help keep the bigs for Western Reserve in check through the games final three quarters.
Free throw shooting helped to keep the Roughriders afloat through the four quarters as they finished the contest 16 of 22 but just 11/31 from the field and 2/6 from beyond the three point line.
Ottawa Glandorf who led 48-28 heading into the final eight minutes on the Lexington Minutemen scoreboard got strong contributions from Kadie Hempfling (17 points, 10 steals, 6 rebounds, 4 assists), Erin Kaufman (14 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists), and Paige Sutter (10 points, 4 rebounds) in the dominating 62-40 victory.
The Western Reserve Roughriders see their season and first regionals trip since the 2011-12 season come to an end at 23-4 while Ottawa Glandorf improves to 25-2 on the year with the win.
Next Thursday night the Titans will make their fourth straight trip to the Schott and take on the Africentric Nubians, 61-60 overtime winners against Hiland on Saturday afternoon for the right to play in the State Championship game on Saturday afternoon.
