BOWLING GREEN – For the second consecutive season the LCC Thunderbirds were responsible for ending the Ottawa Glandorf Titans playoff run, this season by virtue of a 72-63 win on the campus of BGSU.
Ottawa Glandorf got off to a hot start early as the Titans would take a 5-2 lead on a Noah Bramlage three pointer from 25 feet away at the top of the key. LCC responded just moments later with a three pointer of their own to tie the game at 5. Following an LCC bucket that gave the T-Birds their first lead at 7-5, the Titans struck back on their ensuing possession to tie the contest up at 7 with 4:22 remaining.
In the first quarter of Wednesday night’s contest the two squads combined to amass 11 ties or lead changes, including one by OG with :54 left in the quarter behind a trio of made free throws from Brad Recker to push the lead to 15-12 Titans. LCC’s free throws with 3.7 seconds left sent the game to the second quarter with the Titans leading by 1 at 15-14.
The games final lead change would come just :27 seconds into the second quarter as LCC put two points on the board to go up by a single point at 16-15.
On two separate occasions in the period the Titans were unable to score for chunks of time as the Thunderbirds upped their lead by virtue of an 6-0 run and a 7-0 run to 33-24 at the break.
Despite having seen multiple starters commit their 3rd foul, LCC weathered the storm from OG in the 3rd period and scored 15 quarter points as they found themselves leading 48-35 after the games penultimate stanza.
As has been the case so many times in the series between the Titans and the Birds, the team trailing would not just roll over and watch their season come to an end. OG would outscore LCC 28-24 in the 4th quarter, including 8 points from Junior Nick Weirauch.
Every time the Titans would trim the lead to 7 or 9 points, LCC would race down the court and find themselves with a Tre Cobbs or Dantez Walton to push their advantage right back to where it had been previously and hold on for a 72-63 win to advance to the Regional Finals on Saturday.
LCC (24-2) will now play on Saturday night at 7pm looking for their 2nd straight Regional championship as they will take on Randy Kortokrax’s Bishop Hartley Hawks inside the Stroh Center. That contest can be heard live as it happens on 104.9fm, or online at http://1049theeagle.com/ with “The Voice of the T-Birds” Aaron Matthews on the broadcast.
With the loss the Titans see their season come to an end at 19-7 and will say goodbye to 8 Senior, including Princeton bound Noah Bramlage who led the team in scoring this season at over 20.0 points per game, despite finishing with just 17 tonight.
An interesting note on the series: with the win last night LCC has now taken command of the all-time series between the two at 34-33.
