Bearcats soar past LCC to 4-0

LIMA, OH – A big third quarter Monday night helped the Spencerville Bearcats defeat the LCC T-Birds 46-24.

Leading 18-8 at the halftime break the Bearcats blitzed LCC on the defensive end and turned multiple turnovers by the home team into points en route to their fourth victory of the season. A trio of three pointers fell for Spencerville in the games penultimate stanza, one from freshman guard Emma Leis and a pair from senior sharpshooter Jenna Henline to lead the points barrage.

The past ten meetings between the two schools have ended with LCC claiming victories until the clock struck all zeroes with the Bearcats on top this time around.

Spencerville jumped out to a 9-4 lead after the first quarter behind a pair of buckets from their leading scorer Nelaya Burden, a jumper from Kaiden Grigsby and a trio of converted free throws from Grigsby and Jayden Smith.

With LCC again picking up just a pair of markers in the second quarter, a pair of free throws from Josie Mohler and a basket by Madeleine Mohler the T-Birds finished their first half with eight points on 3/15 shooting but also with 16 turnovers.

For their part the Bearcats finished 7/30 in the opening two periods but were able to give away the basketball just four times to push their advantage to ten at the break.

On the evening the Thunderbirds made their biggest mark in the game from the free throw line as they finished 10 of 24. From the field LCC ended the game 7 of 34 and were hounded into 26 turnovers.

Offensively Spencerville shot 13 of 54 from the field and 12 of 20 from the charity stripe while committing 14 miscues.

Bearcats stop skid vs Knights

SPENCERVILLE, OH – It had been quite some time since the Spencerville girls had defeated the Crestview Knights but Thursday night the Bearcat ladies did just that as they downed their Northwest Conference rivals 49-40.

Freshman Nelaya Burden did a bit of damage to the Knights in the opening quarter as she connected on a trio of buckets for six of her ten points in the contest but Jenna Henline hit one of her three three pointers in the period and helped the home squad nab a 15-10 lead after the opening eight minutes.

Crestview Junior Paige Motycka scored seven of her game high 23 in the first quarter but couldn’t find her way in the second period due to the Bearcats strong defensive effort and was only able to add a pair of free throws to her total before the break.

Another three pointer from Henline in the second quarter along with four points from Tiffany Work helped to give the Bearcats a 26-18 advantage at the halftime buzzer.

In the third quarter the Knights cut the Bearcats lead that was as high as 11 at point to just four. Spencerville’s Kaden Grigsby’s theft of a pair of Crestview passes and scores helped thwart the visitors attack and give her own team a 36-28 lead heading into the final period.

Motycka would not let her squad give up in the fourth quarter and did everything she could to try to keep them in the contest as she dropped in 10 markers but would see that number not be enough as her team was outscored 13-12 in the final 8:00 and found themselves behind at the final buzzer.

Two players finished in double figures for the Bearcats (5-14, 3-4) led by Henline with 15 and Burden with 10. Spencerville will be in action next on Saturday afternoon as they play host to Perry in non-league play.

The Knights see their record fall to 11-9 overall and 3-4 in NWC play. Crestview will be off until Monday when they welcome Wayne Trace to Ray Etzler Gymnasium.
