Ringwald earns win as Bearcats hold off Musketeers

FORT JENNINGS, OH – Spencerville Sophomore pitcher Zach Ringwald earned his first career win on Tuesday night as he and his Bearcats teammates held on to defeat Fort Jennings 8-5 in a non-league contest.

Ringwald worked 6.2 innings and nearly fully completed his first career start but with two outs in the seventh inning and trailing 8-3 Fort Jennings Sam Vetter was able to procure a walk and quickly be tripled in by Connor Stechschulte to trim the Bearcat advantage to 8-4.

A single by Logan Hardeman drove in Stechschulte to make the score 8-5 before a walk to pinch hitter Connor Hoersten again put a runner on base for the home team. With the tying run in pinch hitter Devin Miller coming to the plate the Bearcats head coach Shane Falke would go to his bullpen and put Brady Nolan into the contest.

The decision to move to Nolan with two outs and two on in the bottom of the seventh was a good one for the visiting team as he was able to strike out Miller on five pitches to secure the victory for Spencerville and tie the all-time series at 16 wins apiece.

Bearcat shortstop and future Georgia Highlands College Charger Jacob Meyer who paced the defending Northwest Conference Champions by scoring three of their runs on the day in addition to driving in a pair of runs on two doubles and a single on the afternoon.

Meyer, Luke Market, and Brady Nolan, the top three hitters in the Spencerville lineup combined to reach base nine times in their 15 at bats on the day and drive in or score all but two of their teams scores.

Fort Jennings was led by Brandon Wehri who finished the day 2/4 at the plate and drove in a trio of runs including a pair on a bases clearing double in the fifth inning to pull his team to within five runs at the time of the Bearcats lead.

Both teams were active on the basepaths in the game as they accounted for 11 stolen bases (Spencerville 7, FJ 4).

With the win the Bearcats move their season record to 8-10 and will next travel to take on the Lincolnview Lancers on Thursday afternoon in NWC play. Bearcats win home opener

SPENCERVILLE, OH – Spencerville opened their home opener Saturday night by outscoring the visiting Fort Jennings Musketeers from start to finish and improved their record to 3-0 with a 73-49 win.

With their leading scorer of the past three seasons Zach Goecke unable to play due to an ankle injury suffered against Delphos Jefferson on the gridiron, the Bearcats were lead in scoring by the duo of Mason Nourse and Dakota Prichard who combined for 14 of the Bearcats 20 first quarter points and 37 total on the night. Defensively the Cats were able to hold their opponents to just five first quarter points.

In the second quarter the home squad again turned up their pressure and were able to quickly turn the Musketeers miscues directly into fast break points behind the trio of Nourse, Prichard and Senior Damien Corso. When forced to play a halfcourt game by the Fort Jennings defense the Bearcats would rely on the outside shooting from Gary Schrolucke who connected on 2/4 shots from behind the arc and helped Spencerville push their advantage to 45-23 at the halftime break. Despite being tagged for a pair of early fouls, Fort Jennings’ Alex Berelsman was able to race past defenders for a pair of fast break layups and a three pointer for 7 quarter markers. Sophomore Brandon Wehri in the stanza connected on 6-6 free throws as well for the Musketeers.

Luke Trentman’s 8 points in the 3rd period helped the Musketeers cut into the Bearcat lead, but a 21-15 quarter helped propel Spencerville into a 66-38 lead heading into the games final stanza.

Fort Jennings outscored Spencerville 11-7 as five players accounted for the points, but the damage was already done as 15 turnovers in the game and a 17-49 performance from the field would give their opponents their 6th consecutive win in the series.

Spencerville (3-0) will travel to take on Lincolnview on Friday night before traveling to Ottoville on Saturday night while the Musketeers (1-3) will begin PCL play on Friday night on the road taking on the same Big Green.
