Titans bounce back, stay unbeaten in league play

OTTAWA, OH – After suffering their first loss in ten games on Saturday, the OG Titans bounced back in their next game up on Thursday night at home and handed visiting Defiance their first Western Buckeye League loss of the season 46-35.

Just days after being held scoreless for the first time in 46 games, OG guard Erin Kaufman burst out in a big way in the first half against Defiance. The junior accounted for 8 of her team high 16 points in the first half and helped contribute to her teams transition defense with a handful of rebounds and assists setting up teammates for scores off of Bulldog miscues.

In the first quarter the Titans blitzed out to a 14-4 lead and saw their run punctuated by a three from senior Carri Johnson that forced the visitors to use their second timeout in the period.

Trailing 16-4 to begin the second quarter the Defiance offense turned to Ursuline College signee Emily Poling. Poling, a 2nd team WBL selection last season knocked down a pair of deep wing three pointers and finished the stanza with 10 of her game high 18 points to help pull her team within 27-19 at the halftime break.

Entering play Thursday night Defiance turned the basketball over an average of 13.2 points per game, a stat Ottawa Glandorf looked to take their best shot at. On their first four possessions of the third quarter the Bulldogs were hounded into four straight turnovers and five in their first six half possessions. For the evening Defiance ended with 23 miscues. OG quickly worked the basketball ahead to the duo of Kadie Hempfling, and Kaufman who scored fast break layups on run outs and helped the Titans build their lead back to double digits.

Despite shooting just 1/11 from beyond the arc in the first 16 minutes of the contest the Titans found their stroke in the third period as Kaufman drained a pair of shots from deep to put OG ahead by 13 at the quarter stoppage.

Morgan Wityk and Caroline Turner scored 5 points in the third quarter for Defiance, the Bulldogs only points in that time frame but as was the case in the second stanza the visitors turned to Emily Poling in the last eight minutes for their scoring.

Poling drained a pair of three pointers and ended the night as the games leading scorer, but it was too little too late for the Bulldogs as they would suffer their first conference loss of the season and 9th straight at the hands of the Titans.

Defiance (15-2, 6-1) saw their 15 game winning streak snapped and suffered their first loss since November 24th, 2017 when they fell in their season opener to Napoleon. The Bulldogs will be off until next Thursday night when they welcome Wapak to town and look to stay alone in second place in the WBL.

Ottawa Glandorf (16-2, 7-0) the 9th ranked team in Division 3 in the latest AP Polls this week has now won 17 straight conference games and 22 straight home games at the Supreme Court. OG will see their next contest be a non-league visit from Elida district tournament mate Patrick Henry on Tuesday at 7:30pm.
