Coldwater, St. Henry post OVISCO Classic wins

CELINA, OH – Two teams punched their tickets Wednesday night to meet for the OVISCO Classic championship on Thursday evening as Coldwater and St. Henry were victorious over Marion Local and Celina inside the Celina Fieldhouse.

Coldwater earned their trip to the finals for the third straight season as they were victorious over Marion Local in the semifinal opener of the evening 60-51 while St. Henry defeated host Celina 51-34 in the nightcap.

Earlier in the season the Cavaliers fell 61-59 to Marion Local but were out to make a statement early on as the trio of Maura Hoying, Olivia Harlamert, and Lauren Bruns helped to give their team a 15-14 advantage at the end of the first period despite six markers from 6’1 Flyers senior Kara Evers in the post.

Just a pair of shots from the field would fall for Marion Local in the second quarter as they were outscored 19-6 by their Midwest Athletic Conference rivals and trailed 34-20 at the halftime stoppage. Lauren Gilliand, the Cavaliers second leading scorer on the season hit for seven of her 12 points in the quarter to help fuel the Coldwater engine but it would be her later performance that would help salt away the contest.

Six Cavs etched their name in the scorebook in the third quarter to give their team a 17 point lead heading to the final eight minutes of the game.

Kara Evers knocked in eight of her game high 21 in the final stanza for the Flyers, but it would be Gilliland who iced the contest for Coldwater as she connected on 5/6 from line to secure a 60-51 victory and a spot in the OVISCO finals.

A competitive first three quarters that saw a 34-29 lead for St. Henry turned into a rout in the final quarter for the Redskins as they defeated the Celina Bulldogs 51-34 in game two of the OVISCO semifinals to earn their trip into the Championship bracket finals Thursday night.

Addy Vaughn was the leading scorer in the contest as she accounted for 21 of her teams 51 markers in the contest, and exploded for 10 in the games penultimate stanza and tied the Celina output for the quarter as well.

Six different players for the St. Henry were able to hit at least one free throw on the evening among the seven who added their named to the scoring column.

With the win the Redskins record moves to 7-2 on the year while Celina falls to 0-9. The Bulldogs were led in scoring by senior Lauren Jackson who dropped in 12. St. Henry won the previous matchup this season 59-40.
