Swift 1 hitter pushes Kalida past Ft Jennings

KALIDA, OH – Austin Swift did it all for Kalida on Thursday. The future Indiana Wesleyan hurler not only struck out 14 Musketeer hitters, he also added a pair of singles and swiped four bases to help the Wildcats secure a 4-0 victory.

After Trevor Maag and Swift opened the bottom of the first inning with a one out walk and single respectively, cleanup hitter Jeffery Knueve grounded out to second base and drove in Maag from third for the first run of the game.

After striking out the side in the top of the second inning, Swift surrendered his first baserunner to Fort Jennings in the game in his next trip to the mound when he walked catcher Nolan Grote. Grote would find himself picked off leaning between first and second base following a pair of strikeouts and see the inning come to an end with his team still behind on the scoreboard.

Having reached base on a two out error by the Musketeer infield, Swift proceeded to swipe second base and again give his team a runner in scoring position and would score after taking third base and then home on an errant throw into left field to make the score 2-0 Kalida after three innings of play.

With a full count as the first batter of the top of the fourth inning the Musketeers pushed across their only hit of the contest as Luke Trentman’s single gave the visitors their second baserunner of the game. A pair of strikeouts and a groundout would end the Fort rally in the inning however and they would not see another runner reach the basepaths.

Swift’s second run of the game came in the fifth inning when after picking up a single and stealing second base he was driven in by his battery mate Knueve for the second time and run the advantage to 3-0 Kalida.

Derek Buss singled with a pair of outs in the bottom of the sixth for Kalida and was quickly pinch run. Leadoff hitter Trent Siebeneck who had previously grounded out twice and struck out added the last run of the contest as he doubled to the outfield.

Of his 14 strikeouts in the contest, Swift would finish by striking out the final four hitters and and six of the last nine he faced. In 17 innings on the mound this season the reigning PCL Player of the Year has yet to allow a run.

Swift (3-0) took the win for the home squad while Brandon Wehri who finished with 5 K’s and surrendered 6 hits was tagged with the loss. Defensively the Musketeers committed three errors in the contest that gave Kalida opportunities to score as well.

Trent Gerding finished 2 for 3 in the game for Kalida as he singled, doubled and stole a base in the win.

Kalida improves to 4-1 on the season, 1-0 in the Putnam County League and drops Fort Jennings to 1-6 overall, 0-2 in the league.
