KENTON, OH – Thursday night the Ottawa Glandorf Titans paired their own 43-33 victory at Kenton and a Wapakoneta victory over Defiance to be crowned outright Western Buckeye League champions for the second straight season and third overall title in a row.
OG jumped out to an 11-2 first quarter lead as they forced host Kenton into 10 turnovers but found themselves tied at 12-12 when Kenton connected on a pair of three pointers from Kori Barnett and Haylee Bushong.
Ashley Schroeder got Ottawa Glandorf on the board for the first time in the stanza with 4:52 when she hit one of two tosses from the free throw line and woke up a Titan offense that accounted for 11 points the rest of the way before the buzzer.
With freshman starter Kelsey Erford not available for the night it was Brianna Schimmoeller off the bench who provided the spark for OG as she stepped into a deep three in the second quarter, played solid defense and hit four key free throws to help secure her teams win in the fourth quarter.
Kenton’s only points in the second half came from the free throw line or from behind the arc. Having already shown they are able to connect from deep in an 18 three point night against Ada, the Wildcats showed off their love for the long ball in the second half as they utilized threes from Kori Barrett and freshman Jenna Manns to remain within striking distance of the Titans in the last eight minutes.
Free throws on the evening were also a saving grace for Kenton to keep them close to the visitors as they hit on 11 of 14 of their chances.
Kadie Hempfling led the Titans in scoring with a 13 point, 11 rebound, 6 assist, 8 steal performance in the victory. Despite forcing 27 turnovers by the Wildcats on the night the Titans gave the ball away 22 times themselves and connected on 6 of 10 from the line.
Kenton falls to 13-6 overall and 4-4 in WBL play with the loss and will next be in action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to take on Waynesfield-Goshen. The Wildcats were led in scoring by Kori Barrett with 11.
Ottawa Glandorf moves to 18-2 on the year and 8-0 in Western Buckeye League contests where they have now won 18 consecutive contests. The Titans will travel to Archbold on Tuesday night to wrap up non-conference play against as they take on the state ranked Blue Streaks.
