Spencerville surges late past Elida

SPENCERVILLE, OH – It took a total team effort and almost all four quarters, but the Spencerville Bearcats kept their record perfect on the young season as they defeated visiting Elida 43-32.

Early in the first quarter behind a strong opening period from 6’4 junior post Alex Carter, the Bearcats jumped out to a 7-0 lead in their home gym. With 1:12 left in the stanza Elida found themselves on the scoreboard for the first time when their leading scorer Shyah Wheeler connected on a two point basket to cut the lead to 7-2.

Nelaya Burden who would lead all scorers with 16 points on the evening for Spencerville totaled 5 of her first half 7 points in the second quarter, but it was again Wheeler who would help lead the visitors back and ultimately into the lead. With 1:23 left in the opening half of play the 5’10 senior connected on a three pointer to put Elida on top 16-14. Three pointers by Hayleigh Bacome and Cienna Kuhn helped to give Elida an 18-17 halftime advantage.

One of the games biggest stories began to come together in the second half of play as each team would see their leading scorers and defenders be given extended time on the bench due to foul trouble.

A free throw to complete an and one opportunity for Burden gave Spencerville a 19-18 lead early in the period and helped to lead her squad to a 10-7 quarter and a two point lead at the third quarter stoppage.

With foul trouble beginning to deeply plague both squads, each team would get to show their skills at the free throw line. For their part the Bearcats were able to connect on 9 of 11 from the charity stripe to help secure their victory.

Jayden Smith led the home team from the stripe and on the floor in the final period as she ended the contest by hitting a key three pointer and 5/6 from the line for 10 points.

Shyah Wheeler led the Elida attack with 11 points, 3.5 under her average through the opening pair of games. The Bulldogs see their season record fall to 1-2 overall and will begin Western Buckeye League play on Thursday night when they play host to defending conference winner Ottawa Glandorf.

Spencerville sees their record move to 2-0 and will travel to Paulding for the start of Northwest Conference play on Thursday night before again hitting the road on Monday night to take on Lima Central Catholic in non-league action.

Bearcats, Bulldogs split doubleheader

Spencerville, Ohio – Both Spencerville and Elida utilized big innings in their doubleheader against one another to take one victory apiece Saturday afternoon.

Elida took game one against the Bearcats as the Bulldogs jumped out to 1-0 lead in the first two innings against Spencerville starting pitcher Nick Freewalt.

Spencerville would storm back in the second inning as they would put up 3 runs and go ahead 3-1 on the Bulldogs.

Elida got a run out of bases loaded situation in the second, and would tie the game on a Freewalt wild pitch in their half of the third inning. Things would get even better for the visitors in the inning as they took advantage of the bases still being loaded and there being just one out as they accounted for 6 runs and went ahead 7-3 heading into the bottom of the second.

With a four run deficit on the scoreboard the Bearcats got a run back on the first swing of the bottom half of the second inning when Thad Ringwald’s flyball down the left field line cleared the 305 foot distance to cut the lead to 7-4.

Hunter French came on in relief of Freewalt in the third inning for Spencerville and would inherit three runners on base with no outs. Elida would manage to get one of the runners in on a sacrifice fly to double up the Bearcats at 8-4.

9-5 would be the closest the Bearcats would get the score in the game as they did so on a French 2 out rbi in the 6th. A handful of wild pitches and a grand slam for the Bulldogs would provide the rest of the scoring as they would go on to win 15-5 and take game one of the afternoons doubledip.

Nick Freewalt took the loss for the Bearcats in the contest.

Freshman Brady Nolan took the hill for the Bearcats in the second game and settled into a nice groove early as his team sat the Bulldog hitters down 1-2-3 in the opening inning with a throw out on a stolen base attempt and a double play.

After being sent down in order themselves to in their first chance at the plate, the Bearcats hurler hit a pair of Elida hitters with no outs to open the next half inning. A ground out scored one of the two runners for the visiting team and put them on top of the scoreboard 1-0.

Mitchell Youngpeter, the Bearcats young catcher gave the Cats their first runner in scoring position of the contest as he slapped a ball into the outfield and zoomed into second base. Youngpeter would later be driven in to tie the game at 1-1 on a ball that took an awkward bounce for the Bulldogs second baseman and allowed the hitter to reach first base.

Nick Freewalt gave Spencerville their first lead of the game on his next foray to the plate as his single in the bottom of the third inning plated the second run of the game for the Cats.

Nolan would be taken off of the mound in the fourth inning after a pair of hitters reached base with just one out. Freshman Jaret Montenery would next inhabit the mound for the Bearcats and go the rest of the way for his squad. One of the runners that Montenery inherited from Nolan would come around to score and close the door on Brady’s line (3 1/3 innings, 2 runs, 3 hits) for the game and tie the contest at 2-2 heading into the bottom half of the fourth inning on a perfectly executed suicide squeeze bunt attempt.

Jacob Meyer came around to score in the fifth inning from second base for Spencerville as he was driven in by Freewalt’s bloop single in the outfield to put the Bearcats on top 3-2. Spencerville would add 3 more runs in the inning (an rbi single from Youngpeter, a Brady Becker rbi single, and error by Elida). All four of the Bearcat runs in the inning came with just 1 out on the scoreboard.

Montenery sent the game into the bottom of the sixth inning at 6-2 Bearcats after he fanned the side for the Bulldogs. In their last at bat of the game the Cats would push across four more runs and go up 10-2 as a Youngpeter single scored a pair of the runs. Becker came up with his second rbi single of the contest just moments later as he pushed the score to 9-2 before he himself finished as the games final run when he reached home on an Elida wild pitch.

Jaret Montenery picked up his second win of the season for the Bearcats (3-7). Elida’s record after the split is now 6-7. Spencerville is next in action on Monday (4/20) against rival Delphos Jefferson at home in an NWC contest.
