Patrick Henry, Columbus Grove post tournament wins

OTTAWA, OH – Patrick Henry and Columbus Grove punched themselves a return trip to Ottawa Glandorf High School for Friday night as they posted victories at the same venue on Tuesday evening.

Patrick Henry engaged in a slugfest with Leipsic and emerged 54-43 victors in the early game while the Bulldogs utilized a massive point output in the games last three quarters to win 71-36 over Arcadia in the nightcap at OG.

Senior Christian Petersen put his mark on the ballgame early for the Patriots in the first quarter as he connected on a long shot from the wing for 3 to give his team the lead and just moments later a basket from inside for five of his squads 12 markers in the opening period. On the evening Petersen led all scorers with 18 points including 5 three pointers.

Leading 12-8 after the first period the visitors on the Ottawa Glandorf scoreboard for the evening stayed hot from behind the arc to run their lead to 27-17 at the halftime break behind a 5/13 three point shooting performance by three different players led by Petersen with 3 triples.

Patriots leading scorer Xavier Wensink accounted for 9 of his 12 points in the third period to help his squad extend their lead to 15 heading to the fourth period.

Sophomore Wesley Garcia helped to lead a Leipsic run in the fourth stanza as he canned a pair of threes. Tyler Hiegel hit from beyond the arc late in the last quarter as well but the Patriots closed out the game to keep their lead near double figures by hitting 7 of 10 of their opportunities to secure the win.

“It’s always hard to lose a game, especially in the tournament but I’m really proud of the effort of this entire team all season and especially tonight. We tip our cap to Patrick Henry, they made their shots and we didn’t,” Leipsic coach Chris Kuhlman said about his team and their performance tonight.

Leipsic sees their second season under Kuhlman come to an end for the second straight campaign at OG and at 8-15 overall while Patrick Henry (10-13) will move on to play second seeded Kalida on Friday night at 6:15pm.
