Titans nab Sectional title

MILLER CITY, OH – Twenty four hours after their schools girls programs met in Elida the Ottawa Glandorf and Spencerville boys battled in Miller City with the same result, a running clock Titan victory 89-42.

Quick scores from Dalton Prichard and Ben Dues gave the young Bearcats a 5-2 lead in the first quarter but once the Titan offense took the lead at 6-5 on a Richie Knowlton basket at 3:37 the rout was on for OG.

Jake Dible, a 6’6 senior who finished the game with 14 markers had it working down low early in the first period as he pushed in half a dozen markers to put OG on top 16-8 after the opening stanza.

Western Buckeye League Player of the Year Jay Kaufman who would go on to lead the game in scoring with 27 points and also record his 1,000th career point in the process on the night dominated the smaller Bearcat defenders in the second period as he pumped across 11 of his points.

Missing two starters in Owen Hiegel and Bryce Schroeder due to ankle injuries the Titans not only had to search for a pair of extra bodies, they also needed to replace a combined 23.7 points per contest. Ottawa Glandorf didn’t have to look very far for a big scoring output Friday night as Carter Heringhaus knocked down two of his five three pointers and gave the home team a 41-24 halftime lead.

Spencerville’s middle quarter scoring came from the duo of Drew Armstead and Keegan Goecke who combined for 18 of the Cats points in the game during a 16 minute span.

Every time in the second half it seemed like Spencerville might make a run at Ottawa Glandorf the Titans forced a myriad of turnovers and watched them be turned directly into points on the offensive end by Kaufman, Dible, or from behind the arc by Heringhaus who dropped in three of his triples in the third.

As time began to wind down OG began to turn to their senior Kaufman to continue his pursuit of his 1,000th career point. In the middle of the final quarter the All-Ohio selection finally pushed across the milestone and headed to the bench with the game firmly in hand to a loud round of applause from the Titan supporters in the building.

On the evening nine different Titans reached the scoreboard with three, Kaufman (27), Heringhaus (17), and Richie Knowlton (11) ending in double figures in the win.

Spencerville was led in scoring by Drew Armstead who finished with 12. The Bearcats season comes to an end at 3-20 while Ottawa Glandorf improves to 22-1 and will take on Tinora on Thursday, March 8th at 6pm inside Lima Senior High School to begin district play.

Game Notes: OG head coach Tyson McGlaughlin won 30 games at Miller City before coming to OG in two seasons.

Big Green streak past Spencerville

OTTOVILLE, OH – For the Big Green of Ottoville Saturday night’s 54-39 win over visiting Spencerville represented the start and end to a couple of streaks.

Ottoville’s win represented their first in nine tries against Spencerville dating back to their last victory in 2010 over the Bearcats when Tom Von Sossan called Heckman Gymnasium home.

Unfortunately for the Bearcats the loss represents a streak of a different kind, the fifth straight loss to open the season. The last time Spencerville suffered a five game losing streak was the opening of the 2009/10 campaign that saw the Northwest Conference squad drop their first seven contests before rallying to beat Bluffton in their eighth game of the year.

Spencerville 6’4 senior and All-Ohio Offensive lineman Ben Dues scored six of his team high 14 points in the first quarter down low to give his team an early 11-5 lead at the end of the opening quarter.

In the second eight minutes of the contest the Big Green found themselves with many opportunities at the free throw line while their opponents found a pair of their starters on the bench with a pair of fouls. Ottoville’s Keagan Leis connected on a pair of free throws with 3:00 to go in the first half to tie the contest at 17-17 just moments before teammate Ryan Bendele split a pair to put the Big Green on top for good at 18-17.

Nick Moorman nailed all four of his charity tosses in the second stanza to help lead his team to a 12/13 performance in the quarter and to a 25-22 advantage at the break.

Six players marked tallies in the scorebook for Ottoville in the third period led by Josh Thorbahn’s eight points and back to back three pointers that forced Spencerville to utilize a timeout in effort to stop the Big Green run.

Perhaps the biggest highlight of the entire contest came in the waning seconds of the third stanza as 6’6 freshman Ryan Suever ripped away a Spencerville miscue and raced the length of the floor for a slam dunk just in front of the third quarter buzzer for two of his four points in the game.

The final eight minutes of the contest saw the visitors outscore the hosts 7-6 with four players adding buckets, including Dues for his final points of the evening. Ottoville’s Logan Kemper, a 6’3 senior tossed in all of his teams points and finished the night with a game high 17 in the victory.

Ottoville sees their record rise to 6-0 on the season and will host Elida on Friday night before traveling south to Delphos on Saturday night to take on the St. Johns Blue Jays.

Things don’t get any easier for the Bearcats (0-5) on the schedule as they will be home for a pair of games against former Northwest Conference rival Lima Central Catholic and PCL foe Kalida next weekend.

Defense keeps Bearcats perfect in NWC

SPENCERVILLE, OH – A strong defensive effort coupled with a big opening offensive run to open the game helped the Spencerville Bearcats move their league leading Northwest Conference record to 6-0 Friday night as they defeated rival Columbus Grove 47-27.

Hot shooting from four different Bearcats in the opening eight minutes gave the home squad a quick 12-0 lead minutes into the game. Bailey Croft, the Bearcats 6’6 Senior knocked down a shot from behind the arc and a pair of free throws en route to seven of his game high 14 markers and helped create a handful of Grove turnovers to push the Cats advantage to a dozen.

Trailing 12-0 with 2:32 remaining in the first quarter the Bulldogs finally posted a tally on the scoreboard when St. Francis football commit Rece Roney found the bottom of the net. Roney who found himself in foul trouble early for Columbus Grove would score the only points of the quarter for his squad and see the visitors trek into the break down 14-2.

Everything that went wrong in the first quarter for Columbus Grove went right in the second quarter as the Bulldogs forced the Bearcats into a myriad of fouls and capitalized to cut the lead to just four at 20-16 at the halftime break courtesy of a 10-0 run midway through the period that included five points from Junior Logan Malsam.

Turnovers and missed shots were the story of the third quarter as the two rivals combined to score just 17 points and see the Bearcats head to the final stanza leading 30-23.

Five players scored for Spencerville in the fourth quarter including their leading scorer on the season Dakota Prichard who secured seven of his 11 points on the evening in the period to help solidify the fifth straight win for the NWC leaders in the series 47-27.

Columbus Grove (4-11, 0-5) was led in scoring by Roney who finished with 10. The Bulldogs will travel to take on Continental in Putnam County League play Saturday night where they will look to improve their PCL mark to 3-2 against the Pirates.

Spencerville improves their record to 13-4 overall and 6-0 in the NWC. The Bearcats travel to fellow league undefeated foe Crestview on Friday night in a game that could very well determine the conference champion.
