Big Green streak past Spencerville

OTTOVILLE, OH – For the Big Green of Ottoville Saturday night’s 54-39 win over visiting Spencerville represented the start and end to a couple of streaks.

Ottoville’s win represented their first in nine tries against Spencerville dating back to their last victory in 2010 over the Bearcats when Tom Von Sossan called Heckman Gymnasium home.

Unfortunately for the Bearcats the loss represents a streak of a different kind, the fifth straight loss to open the season. The last time Spencerville suffered a five game losing streak was the opening of the 2009/10 campaign that saw the Northwest Conference squad drop their first seven contests before rallying to beat Bluffton in their eighth game of the year.

Spencerville 6’4 senior and All-Ohio Offensive lineman Ben Dues scored six of his team high 14 points in the first quarter down low to give his team an early 11-5 lead at the end of the opening quarter.

In the second eight minutes of the contest the Big Green found themselves with many opportunities at the free throw line while their opponents found a pair of their starters on the bench with a pair of fouls. Ottoville’s Keagan Leis connected on a pair of free throws with 3:00 to go in the first half to tie the contest at 17-17 just moments before teammate Ryan Bendele split a pair to put the Big Green on top for good at 18-17.

Nick Moorman nailed all four of his charity tosses in the second stanza to help lead his team to a 12/13 performance in the quarter and to a 25-22 advantage at the break.

Six players marked tallies in the scorebook for Ottoville in the third period led by Josh Thorbahn’s eight points and back to back three pointers that forced Spencerville to utilize a timeout in effort to stop the Big Green run.

Perhaps the biggest highlight of the entire contest came in the waning seconds of the third stanza as 6’6 freshman Ryan Suever ripped away a Spencerville miscue and raced the length of the floor for a slam dunk just in front of the third quarter buzzer for two of his four points in the game.

The final eight minutes of the contest saw the visitors outscore the hosts 7-6 with four players adding buckets, including Dues for his final points of the evening. Ottoville’s Logan Kemper, a 6’3 senior tossed in all of his teams points and finished the night with a game high 17 in the victory.

Ottoville sees their record rise to 6-0 on the season and will host Elida on Friday night before traveling south to Delphos on Saturday night to take on the St. Johns Blue Jays.

Things don’t get any easier for the Bearcats (0-5) on the schedule as they will be home for a pair of games against former Northwest Conference rival Lima Central Catholic and PCL foe Kalida next weekend.

Bearcats victory earns Sensabaugh 200th win

PAULDING, OH – With their 75-56 victory in Paulding on Friday night the Spencerville Bearcats gave mentor Kevin Sensabaugh his 200th career victory.

In the midst of a six game swing away from home the Bearcats got solid contributions from their bench and saw four players finish in double figures as they improved to 7-1 on the season and 2-0 in Northwest Conference play while dropping host Paulding to 3-7, and 0-2.

Seniors Dakota Prichard and Bailey Croft led the visitors attack as they scored 23 and 17 points respectively, but it was the contribution from Junior Ben Dues (11 points, 8 rebounds) that had the Bearcat mentor smiling most. “Ben has played really well for us in back to back games and gave us good minutes tonight” said Sensabaugh.

Daniel Corso had solid first and third quarters for Spencerville as well as he pumped in 11 of his 13 points, including hitting all four of his free throws in the contest.

Paulding finished with two players in double figures as Jaret Miller led the Panthers in scoring and was joined by 6’6 Senior Griffin Harder who netted 10 markers before fouling out late in the fourth period.

Spencerville outscored Paulding 14-12 in the first quarter and pushed their advantage to 27-19 at the halftime break before outpacing the hosts 48-47 in the second half to secure the victory, their 10th in the last 13 meetings with the Panthers.

Free throws were a big story for the game in the second half as the two teams committed enough fouls to put the other deep into the double bonus limit. Paulding hit on 15 of their 21 charity tosses while the Bearcats went 13/15 in the second half. Overall the Bearcats were 21/24 in the game from the line while Paulding finished 19/26.

Saturday night will see Spencerville take their 4-0 road record down St. Route 66 to St. Marys as they battle the Roughriders (2-5) in a non-conference tilt. Paulding will wait until next Friday night, January 13th when they travel to take on Allen East for their next contest, an NWC battle.
