Bulldogs outslug Rockets in PCL battle

COLUMBUS GROVE, OH – Columbus Grove struck first and last in Tuesday night’s Putnam County League matchup with rival Pandora Gilboa as they defeated the Rockets at home 16-6 in a 5 inning contest.

PG nabbed the first two baserunners of the contest in their half of the opening stanza but came up empty on the scoreboard when Ryan Lee was forced out at third and Isaac Stahl was thrown out at the same base to end the top half of the first inning with the Rockets scoreless.

Columbus Grove wasted no time putting up runs in their first at bat as the Bulldogs would account for a five spot and bat around in their opening at bat. Just a pair of hits came across for the home team but a trio of walks and a hit by pitch from PG hurler Ryan Lee helped his opponents to a 5-0 advantage after the first six outs of the game.

In their second time at the plate the Rockets blasted off against Grove starter Kurt Griffith and utilized a trio of singles, a pair of walks and a sacrifice fly by Austin Decker to centerfield to tie the ballgame with a 5 run inning of their own.

Three runs on three hits in the third inning put Columbus Grove ahead for good as Dane Schroeder and Alex Schnieder both singled before catcher Brady Hauenstein was hit by a pitch for the second time in as any at bats before two of the three were knocked in by Tayt Birnesser to push ahead ultimately at 8-5 when the inning ended.

For the second time in the contest the Bulldogs batted around, this time coming in the bottom of the fourth inning. After seeing Hauenstein hit by a pitch for the third consecutive trip at the plate, Columbus Grove would send 12 batters to the plate and scratch across 7 runs on 4 hits to go ahead 15-5 after four innings.

Needing to get at least one run to keep from being run ruled the Rockets saw their catcher Josh Shartell reach on an error and quickly be moved to second base on a Kurt Griffith balk. Moments after right fielder Zeb George was hit by a pitch in the helmet and pinch run, PG would get Shartell on the scoreboard for their sixth run and keep the game going into the bottom of the fifth when shortstop turned relief pitcher Brennen Moorman singled him in.

With the bases loaded and just one out in the bottom of the inning it was the Bulldogs Dane Schroeder who provided the final hit of the ballgame as he singled into left center to bring home Brady Rudasill and provide the final score of 16-6 in the contest.

Kurt Griffith improved to 2-1 on the season on the mound for the Bulldogs who improve to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in Putnam County League play. Griffith threw 74 pitches on the day and gave up 6 runs on 6 hits while striking out and walking a pair in the win. Columbus Grove will be back in action on Wednesday as they take on Miller City in PCL action starting at 5pm.

Pandora Gilboa’s Ryan Lee sees his record fall to 0-1 on the year as he tossed 66 pitches over 2 innings of work, giving up 8 runs on 4 hits while walking 5 and striking out just one batter. The Rockets are in action against Vanlue in Blanchard Valley Conference play on Wednesday at home at 5pm.

Battle of Route 12 rematch

COLUMBUS GROVE, OHIO – For the second time this season the Columbus Grove Bulldogs defeated the Pandora Gilboa Rockets at Clymer Stadium, this time around 21-6.

Unlike their first matchup which was decided on a late safety by the Bulldogs, Columbus Grove dominated from the second quarter on.

Pandora Gilboa struck first in the contest as a Joey Warnecke punt was returned 90 yards for a touchdown by Jacob Basinger with 7:48 remaining in the opening stanza to give the Rockets a 6-0 advantage.

After once again being forced to punt, the Bulldogs got the football right back as Warnecke celebrated his birthday by collecting the first of five Jacob Miller interceptions on the evening.

Field position was a big part of the first quarter as both teams could move the football up the field but couldn’t get into the endzone before being forced to punt.

Reid Stechschulte threw the first of his two touchdown passes on the night to Senior WR Tanner From who got himself open on a double move and got his fingertips on a 38 yard heave at the goal line to even up the game at 6 before Warnecke’s extra point gave the Bulldogs a 7-6 lead with :19 left in the first quarter.

At halftime the game was 7-6 Grove, but as the Bulldogs had won the toss and deferred to the second half they would get the football to open the third quarter and waste no time getting more points in their column as Stechschulte ran to paydirt from four yards out behind great blocking from his offensive line. Warnecke’s second extra point of the game upped the Grove lead to 14-6 with 9:44 left in the 3rd.

Columbus Grove’s defensive pressure would provide big hits and four interceptions in the second half by Logan Diller, Christian Stechschulte, Tanner From and David Bogart. Offensively the big boys up front did a fantastic job holding their blocks and clearing the way for Stechschulte on the touchdown and for Warnecke who finished with 103 yards rushing.

For the second time on the night Reid Stechschulte tossed a 38 yard touchdown pass, this time to Aiden Fortman with 7:17 left in the third to put Groves lead at 21-6.

The only thing that did not go the way of the 1st Team NWC K/P/RB/LB Warnecke on his birthday was his miss on a 40 yard field goal in the fourth quarter that bounced at the goal line and gave the ball back to Pandora Gilboa before the Bogart interception ended the contest.

With the win the Bulldogs, making their first playoff appearance since 2009 when they lost to Carey in the first round see their record go to 7-4. Pandora Gilboa with the loss sees their first playoff appearance since 2008 end their season at 6-5.

Columbus Grove will play on Saturday afternoon at 1:30pm in Findlay at Donnell Stadium against #1 seeded Tiffin Calvert and can be heard on www.zsportslive.com with myself and Steve Wiener.

Bulldogs nip Rockets

The second annual Zsportslive.com Bowl took place Friday night in Columbus Grove between the Bulldogs and Route 12 rival Pandora Gilboa and was even better than advertised.

A full house at Clymer Stadium witnessed a battle between the Rockets and Bulldogs that wasn’t decided until the games final moments when the Rockets were assessed a penalty in their own endzone that resulted in a safety with 1:09 left on the clock which provided the final margin in their 30-28 loss.

Columbus Grove entered this season for the 3rd straight year with a new starting quarterback, this time in 5’11 Sophomore Reid Stechschulte. Stechschulte took the game over at times and delivered a fantastic first start for his team as he finished 11/24 for 216 yards and 3 touchdowns with just 1 interception.

Tanner From, playing in his first high school football game tonight as a Senior showed he has picked up the Bulldogs scheme as he accounted for two of the Bulldogs seven takeaways on the night.

Joey Warnecke who suffered a concussion in Week 8 last season had a big night for the second year in a row against his rivals, as he accounted for 86 yards on 16 carries and scored the games first touchdown, an 11 yard jaunt early in the second quarter to put Grove on top 6-0 following a missed extra point from his own right foot.

Jacob Basinger would answer on the next Pandora Gilboa possession in short time as he capped off an 84 yard drive by knifing up the home sideline 71 yards just two minutes later to give his team their first lead 7-6 following a made extra point of his own with 9:27 left in the first half.

David Bogart put Columbus Grove back in the lead on their next possession with an 11 yard touchdown catch from a corner endzone pass by Stechschulte as his Bulldogs drove 51 yards in 2:08 to go up 12-7. Columbus Grove failed on their two point conversion and held a 5 point lead with 7:16 left in the second stanza.

Following the second Tanner From interception of the half the Rockets got a safety from defensive end Brandon Walther to close the gap to 12-9 with just 3:03 before the break.

The final score of the half came on a 50 yard pass play down the sideline to Senior wideout/backup qb Jacob Miller from the hand of Basinger to put the Rockets up for the second time at 15-12 with just :51 seconds left before the half. A Miller interception on the next possession gave Pandora Gilboa a chance to up their lead, but a fumble seconds before the half quickly put an end to that opportunity.

Other than a Joey Warnecke interception on the first possession of the second half by the Rockets, turnover on downs and punts were the story of the 3rd quarter until David Bogart got behind a Pandora Gilboa defensive back and took off on a bullet from Stechschulte that netted the Bulldogs a 33 yard touchdown. With the touchdown the Bulldogs got the lead back at 19-15.

Pandora Gilboa trailed for just :13 seconds of time in the 3rd as Jacob Basinger again continued his huge night (finished with 391 all-purpose yards) by sprinting past the Grove special teamers and scampering in on an 80 yard kickoff return for a touchdown to put PG up 22-19 with 1:52 left in the penultimate stanza.

Rarely seen by a Division 7 school is a made field goal, however for Joey Warnecke it was as simple as line up and nail it. Warnecke connected on a 34 yard try to tie the game at 22 with :12 left in the 3rd.

3:06 is all it took the Rockets on their next possession to go 54 yards and run the score to 28-22 following another touchdown by Basinger, this time from 10 yards out on a rush through the middle.

Not to be outdone again, Reid Stechschulte led the Bulldogs down the field with a :67 second drive that was aided by a PG personal foul penalty to give Columbus Grove new life. Reid connected with Aidan Fortman on a 39 yard throw to the 2 yardline that Aidan dove into the left endzone and tied the game at 28. Warnecke missed the ensuing extra point wide right and we remained tied at 28 with just 2:30 left in the contest before the aforementioned safety gave Columbus Grove a 30-28 advantage that they were able to close out the win with after a Bogart interception sealed the deal as PG was unable to stop the clock with no timeouts left.

With the win the Bulldogs even the Zsportslive.com Bowl Series at 1-1 and avenge their 26-12 loss last season.

Columbus Grove improves to 1-0 on the season and will be home next Friday night against 1-0 Allen East in NWC play. Grove vs Allen East can be heard with myself and Steve Wiener on www.zsportslive.com with coverage beginning at 7pm.

Pandora Gilboa drops to 0-1 on the season and will head home to take on the 1-0 McComb Panthers squad that has beaten them 8 out of their last 10 meetings. You can hear PG vs McComb live as it happens with Dave Boninsegna on WZOQ Radio.
