CELINA, OH – Ottawa Glandorf hurler Chase Schrieber surrendered just a trio of hits while striking out 10 Celina hitters in the Titans 2-0 win over the Bulldogs on the road on Friday night at Montgomery Field.
Through the first three innings the Bulldogs were able to put a runner on against the Titan right hander but were unable to bring them in to score as a series of outs put a stop to their opportunities to break the scoreless contest. In the first Celina saw their first two baserunners be left on when Gabe Perry bounced out, in the second it was a 3-1 putout against Kane Moeller to stop the frame.
A two out single from Parker Maurer for the third and final hit of the game for the Bulldogs gave the home team an opportunity, but it would be short lived as the Celina centerfielder would a batter later become the last out of the inning on a 6-4 putout by the visitors.
Ottawa Glandorf’s only two to reach base also came in the third inning as Mike Bowers and Owen Hiegel drew walks but were forced to head back into the dugout when outfielder Grant Fuerst was thrown out 6-3 for the third out.
The lone markers of the contest came in the top of the fifth inning of play for the Titans as designated hitter Ethan White opened the frame with a single. Mike Bowers reached for the second time in the game on an error by Celina catcher Kyle Stein on a bunted ball that pulled first baseman Reid Harter off of the bag in an attempt to make the out.
Following a sacrifice bunt by BJ Fortman to move the runners to second and third respectively, Owen Hiegel was walked to load the bases for OG. A 4-3 groundout by Grant Fuerst scored White before Austin Horstman knocked in a run and nearly had a second RBI but saw his teammate Hiegel was thrown out at the plate trying to score by Maurer to keep the lead at 2-0 headinf to the bottom of the fifth.
After allowing Maurer to reach with a single and Perry to end the third frame with a fielders choice, Schrieber would retire the final 12 batters of the contest including 8 via the strikeout to secure the Titan win.
OG moves to 9-2 on the season overall and 3-1 in Western Buckeye League play with the win while the Bulldogs fall to 2-9 on the season and 1-5 in WBL contests.
Celina will travel to Fort Loramie on Saturday for the Loramie Invitational while the Titans are off until Tuesday when they begin the first of their five straight home games by hosting WBL foe Shawnee.
Head coach Nick Miller now has 199 wins in his career and will look to become just the eighth coach in Putnam County history to reach the 200 victory mark when the Titans play on Tuesday.
Schrieber improves his record to 2-2 on the season as he struck out 10 Celina hitters in 7 innings of work while handing out just three hits and walking one while also hitting just one batter.
Ethan Piper fared well on the mound as well for the Bulldogs but saw his season record fall to 0-1 as he allowed just 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 4 and walking 3 batters in the game. Piper opened the game by retiring the first seven hitters he faced and allowed just three of the first 15 to reach base.
Parker Maurer led Celina with a pair of singles while Ethan White did the same for OG and scored one of his teams two runs.
Celina leads the all-time series between the two WBL mates 22-21.
