Wildcats advance to regionals

WAPAKONETA, OH – Solid defense and balanced scoring Saturday night led the Minster Wildcats to a second win of the year over Ft. Recovery and into the next round as they defeated the Indians 53-40 at Wapakoneta High School in front of a packed house.

Xavier bound Courtney Prenger and classmate Demaris Wolf led Minster in scoring in the first half as they each pumped across 8 points in the opening two quarters to put their team on top 24-15 at the halftime break.

Five players scored for the Indians in the first two quarters but none were able to really take over the ballgame as sophomore Val Muhlenkamp recorded four of her team high 12 points on the evening in the first stanza.

For the game the Minster full court defense pressured their opponents into 24 turnovers on the evening, many of which that were immediately turned into Wildcat baskets on the opposite end.

Despite having no points and missing all three tosses from a foul on a three point attempt in the first half, Fort Recovery senior Grace Thien had it going for a spurt in the third quarter as she knocked down a pair of deep three pointers and free throws to help pull her team back into the contest. Teammate Carley Stone’s 5 points also helped to stop Minster from pulling away in the period and ran the scoreboard to 36-28 Wildcats after 3.

In the contest the Wildcats connected on 17 of their 28 free throws. The fourth quarter was especially good from the line for the Wildcats as they hit on 12 of their 17 tosses and began to salt the game away with Fort Recovery forced to foul to stop the clock.

Val Muhlenkamp led the way for Fort Recovery in the final eight minutes as she knocked down a pair of free throws and a trio of shots from the field. Muhlenkamp would end the evening with 10 rebounds to go along with her dozen markers.

Courtney Prenger finished the game with a double double as well for the Wildcats with an 18 point, 11 rebound performance and was joined in double figures by Demaris Wolf who accounted for a pair of three pointers and 13 points.

Fort Recovery sees their season come to an end at 19-6 while the Wildcats improve to 22-3 and will travel to Vandalia on Thursday night for a 6:15pm regional semifinals matchup with Tri-Village.

Indians sink Commodores

Fort Recovery forced 31 Perry turnovers and got scoring from 10 players as they defeated the Commodores 63-18 in Division 4 sectional semifinals action Wednesday night at the Palace in Coldwater.

1st Team All-MAC selection Tori Lennartz got things going for the Indians on their first possession as she drained a three pointer from the left wing to put her squad on top for good at 3-0. Both teams would struggle from field in the first quarter, Fort Recovery would go nearly three minutes until they were able to put up another point on the scoreboard. 16 consecutive points would find their way into the home column for the Indians until Perry’s Kyazia Healy connected on her fourth free throw attempt of the quarter to break the streak. Fort Recovery led after the opening quarter by a 16-1 margin.

Perry would open the second quarter with a score from Sophomore guard Kylyn Collins that cut the Fort Recovery lead to 16-3 in the opening moments of the second quarter but never got any closer as the Indians responded by outscoring the Commodores 15-5 the rest of the first half. Collins would add another two point marker in the quarter but only 2nd team NWCC pick Courtland Fowler would be able to dent the scoring column as she connected on a deep three pointer from the wing for Perry.

For the second consecutive quarter the Commodores opened up the scoring to begin the second half as a triple from Latrisha Edmonds got them within 20 at 31-11. Carley Stone would lead 5 players in points for the quarter for the Indians her 6 period points helped her squad push their lead out to 51-15 heading into the final stanza.

Just one score is all the Commodores would muster in the 4th quarter, a three point basket from Edmonds as they would be outscored 12-3 and fall to the Indians 63-18 when the clock reached 0:00.

Perry was led in scoring by Latrisha Edmonds with 6 points, but saw their season come to and end for the second consecutive season at 4-19.

Lennartz would lead both teams in scoring with 18 as she used 5 first half three pointers to do so. Fort Recovery moves their season record to 17-6 and will head back to Coldwater to play on Saturday night’s second Sectional Finals matchup which tips off at approximately 8pm.
