Hawks soar past Leipsic

LEIPSIC, OH – A fast paced offensive attack led by two scorers in double figures led Maumee Valley Country Day past host Leipsic Saturday night 68-44.

Zeb Jackson, a 6’2 sophomore being recruited heavily by a host of schools hit for 9 of his game high 19 points in the first period of play against the Vikings on Saturday night. When he wasn’t busy dazzling the crowd with his athletic array of shots the Hawks 17.4 point per game scorer was leading the offense into the front court and handing out assists to the likes of Jaiden Woodley.

Leading 18-6 after the first period the visitors were slowed down by the Leipsic offensive attack in the second quarter as the home team got a trio of three pointers from the duo of Quintin Bruce off the bench and starter Tyler Hiegel to pull themselves within 10 at 34-24 when the time ran out on the second period.

As good as Leipsic was offensively in the second quarter, they were unable to sustain the run in the games penultimate period as they were held to just six points. MVCD for their part turned misses by their opponent into scores from six different players as they added to their lead.

Point guard Dez Jett accounted for four of his eight points in the third quarter as he utilized his ball handling skills as well as speed up and down the court to stick in a pair of fast break layups for Maumee Valley. The Hawks finished the game with 19 points off turnovers.

“I think we did a good job of breaking the initial pressure in the full court. Their overall length and quickness led to so many deflections and we just weren’t used to playing that pace. Transition points were ultimately the difference in this game. We were able to contain them in the half court but were unable to get back and make stops in transition” – Leipsic head coach Chris Kuhlman.

With the lead having swollen to 18 points after the fourth quarter the Vikings began to turn to the long ball to get back into things but were unable to hit them as a whole, finishing 6-26 for the contest. In the final eight minutes of play however the Leipsic offense netted three of their shots from deep as Cole Rieman, Kaiden Rader, and Tyler Gillespie were able to hit from deep.

Once the contest reached the final buzzer MVCD moved their season record to 9-3 with a 68-44 victory while Leipsic saw their mark fall to 5-7.

Leipsic who had not played a home game in almost exactly a full month coming into the game will be at home for a pair of contests next weekend as they will welcome Cory-Rawson to the LHS on Friday night for a Blanchard Valley Conference tilt before seeing Kalida visit for a Putnam County League battle on Saturday.
