ST. MARYS, OH – Despite not scoring for a nearly 6 minute span between the third and fourth quarters the St. Henry Redskins downed the St. Marys Roughriders 43-32 Friday night in non-league action at the Horseshoe.
St. Marys senior Drew Jacobs opened the scoring for the home squad as his marker put the Riders on top 2-0 early. The WBL members lead would prove to be short lived unfortunately as it would mark his teams only points of the first period. A pair of three pointers for the Redskins from Curtis Ulenhake and Ryan Luttmer coupled with an 0-8 shooting performance by St. Marys would give the visitors a 10-2 lead at the end of the opening stanza.
In the second quarter it was Luttmer again who cashed in from beyond the arc, this time joined by junior Ethan Thieman from deep to help engineer a 14 point quarter to give St. Henry a 24-13 lead heading into the break.
With strong quarter performances both offensively and defensively in the third quarter, the Roughriders pulled to within 29-22 at the next stoppage. Sam Young who finished the night with 7 points connected on a three pointer and a shot from inside the arc to help pull the Redskins lead back into double digits for St. Marys. For their part the visitors were held to just one made basket from the field, a three point goal by Luttmer to go along with a pair of free throws made by sophomore Caden Niekamp.
The final eight minutes of the contest saw a slow down between the two teams and a pair of big performances by St. Henry senior Tyler Schlarman and St. Marys senior Austin Wilker.
Schlarman who entered the contest through the first weekend of the season averaging 19 points per game was held to just 11 and picked up an intentional foul call late in the game exploded in the fourth quarter offensively for 7 of his markers.
Wilker would finish the night with a total of 8 points, but 6 in the final period. On the evening the 6’2 Wilker would help his team with the clock stopped as he connected on 6/6 from the free throw line.
St. Henry moves to 3-0 on the season and will be back in action on Saturday night as they travel to Lima to take on another Western Buckeye League squad in Shawnee.
St. Marys is now 0-3 on the year and has dropped 11 straight games dating back to last season. The Roughriders will welcome New Bremen to town for another WBL vs MAC showdown Saturday night before they begin conference play next Friday night at home against Ottawa Glandorf.
