Kalida wins battle of Wildcats

MILLER CITY, OH – A pair of runs in the fifth inning decided Monday night’s Putnam County League battle of the Wildcats as visiting Kalida came away with a 2-0 victory against Miller City.

Through 90 all-time meetings the two programs have each now won 45 games against the other.

A terrific pitchers duel between Miller City hurler Noah Otto and Kalida right hander Owen Recker was scoreless heading into the games fifth inning.

With a pair of outs coming via strikeouts of Gabe Hovest and Josh Klausing to open the top half of the frame Kalida sent their first baserunner of the inning in the form of Matt Kehres who reached on a Miller City error. Josh Recker drove in the games first scroe as the next hitter by doubling in Kehres before ultimately being driven in himself by teammate Zach Von der Embse own RBI double.

Kalida would rally once more in the top of the seventh inning as the trio of Josh Recker, Luke Erhart, and Von der Embse each singled to load the bases but would find themselves unable to add any insurance runs as teammates Kevin Hamburg and Owen Recker were sat down by a strikeout and a flyout by reliever Mark Kuhlman to keep the game at 2-0 heading to the last half inning of play.

Miller City’s last go round in the contest came against Kalida reliever Josh Klausing and saw only a two out single from catcher Cole Niese before Mark Kuhlman was the games final out on a slow roller back to the pitchers mound to secure the victory.

Early in the games opening frame the Miller City Wildcats placed three runners on the basepaths via a single from Niese and a pair of walks but saw their chance at pulling ahead thwarted by a pair of strikeouts by Kalida’s Recker.

On the evening Recker, a Kent State commit would finish with 15 strikeouts and allow just a pair of hits in his six innings of work. Recker ended the game by tossing 106 pitches but did walk four Miller City hitters in earning his first win of the season on the mound.

Josh Klausing finished with the save for Kalida (3-1) as he threw 17 pitches, struck out a pair and gave up just one hit.

Noah Otto (0-1) took the loss for Miller City (0-3) as he surrendered both of the games tallies along with a pair of hits in 5 innings of work in which he tossed 80 pitches.

Kalida moves to 2-0 in Putnam County League play while Miller City drops to 0-1. Kalida will be in action next on Friday at Patrick Henry while Miller City will look for their first PCL win on Wednesday as they play host to Ottoville at 5pm in a game that can be heard live on WZOQ Radio .
